29 Jan 2023, WINGS in Ecuador: Day 1, Puembo Birding Backyard

Right now I’m spending my first day in Ecuador on the Puembo Birding Backyard, a mattress and breakfast with cool birds conveniently situated close to Quito’s airport. Our WINGS tour opens right here tonight at dinner.

Puembo Birding Backyard is an eBird hotspot so I came upon what I’m prone to see lengthy earlier than I arrived. #1 will probably be a Life Chook that ranges from Columbia to Ecuador, the scrub tanager (Stilpnia vitriolina), simply interested in fruit trays even within the rain.

Maybe I’ll hear a croaking floor dove (Columbina cruziana) that appears like an orange-billed mourning dove and feels like a frog …

… or the intense purple crimson-mantled woodpecker (Colaptes rivolii) …

… or a tremendous hummingbird, the black-tailed trainbearer (Lesbia victoriae).
