29 April 2023

Tomorrow is the large Enlow Fork Extravaganza at State Gamelands 302 on the border of Washington and Greene Counties. Identified for its wildflowers and birds, the positioning is named “Enlow Fork” as a result of its defining characteristic is the creek that runs via it, the Enlow Fork of Wheeling Creek.

Although tomorrow’s climate appears like rain, my pal Barb Griffith and I had a pleasant day there on Wednesday April 26.

We noticed 45 species of birds together with First of 12 months grey catbird, Baltimore oriole and American redstarts (guidelines is right here). We have been disenchanted to not discover any wooden thrushes, scarlet tanagers or rose-breasted grosbeaks although we’ve got seen them there in late April in years previous.

Spring leafout at Enlow Fork was late in comparison with the Metropolis of Pittsburgh, regardless that Enlow is 40 miles south of city. The side-by-side images under present leafout at Schenley Park and at Enlow Fork on nearly the identical day. I didn’t count on our city warmth island to make that a lot distinction.

Lack of leaves and far much less deer browse made the wildflowers very good. Listed below are only a few of these we noticed. As at all times, if I’ve mis-identified any (?Jacob’s ladder vs. Greek valerian?) please let me know.
